An alleged smash-and-grab robber is behind bars this morning. He was caught shortly after he reportedly stole a cellphone from a stationary car at a robot next to the Fountains Circle, which is a smash-and-grab hotspot.
The 23-year-old suspect was caught yesterday evening, a few blocks from the circle.
Reports indicate that the local police were patrolling the hotspots when they noticed a motorist whose Chevrolet Spark's front passenger window had been smashed and his cellphone stolen.
Following a short interaction with the victim, the police went on a hunt for the suspect.
When spotted, the suspect dashed into the bushes. Two Constables parked their patrol van and pursued the suspect on foot until they caught him.
The alleged stolen Samsung Galaxy A5 was recovered from the suspect.
We appeal to the motorists not to drive around with valuables displayed on their car seats. Items like cellphones, wallets, handbags and cash attract the criminals.
The Sunnyside police are currently reviewing other smash-and-grab cases. With further assistance from other potential witnesses and forensic evidence, the suspect could be linked with other similar incidents.
The suspect is expected to be charged with theft out of motor vehicle and possession of stolen property.
He will appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court next week.
