JOHANNESBURG - JEPPESTOWN - XENOPHOBIA CONTINUES AS FOREIGNERS SHOPS LOOTED

Police have called on foreign nationals to come forward and open cases against those who attacked and looted their shops in Jeppestown.

Several shops were targeted in Johannesburg on Sunday night.

The police's Mathapelo Peters says one person has been arrested in connection with the violence.

“We haven’t been able to establish the nationality of the business owners because it happened Sunday evening when businesses were closed. We expect business owners to come forward today.”

On Friday, tensions between foreigners and nationals spilled over on the streets of Pretoria and police used rubber bullets, tear gas and stun grenades to disperse groups of protesters. Police brought the situation in Pretoria back to order on Friday night.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura said his government has put together a number of interventions aimed at addressing some of the fundamental divisions and inequalities in communities.
