SOWETO - GUNFIGHT ERUPTS BETWEEN ARMED ROBBERS AND GAUTENG TRAFFIC OFFICIALS

Gauteng traffic officers who were patrolling in Mokopane Drive in White City, Soweto, were responding to a tip-off by community members when suspects started shooting at them.

It is alleged that the suspects had earlier robbed a contractor who was about to pay his employees next to Jabulani Theatre.

The officers returned fire and one suspect sustained injuries to the lower body. Two suspects have been arrested, with the injured suspect under guard in hospital. The third suspect escaped in a Volkswagen Jetta.

Each of the two suspects was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

The suspects will be charged with armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms, and attempted murder. They will appear before the Protea Magistrates' Court soon.
